English Award Scheme held its first English Speaking Day on 10th October 2019, with "Chinglish Culture in Hong Kong" being the theme this time. The English Speaking Day gave all teachers and students an insight into the phenomenon of "Chinglish". By conversing with students, teachers found it interesting to learn how common it is in the daily lives of the students. Phrases such as "people mountain, people sea" (a sea of people) and "add oil" (an expression of encouragement) seemed to be particularly popular. The students all agree that using Chinglish would not make their English better. This didn't stop Chinglish being popular though as many of the students said that using Chinglish made communicating with their friends easier, particularly on social media.
All participants look forward to the next English Speaking Day!
