A visit to Mei Ho House
2023-12-18

On 18 December 2023, twenty F.4 history students visited the Mei Ho House in the afternoon. This building served as one of the first public housing estates in Hong Kong. It was built in 1954 as part of the Shek Kip Mei Estate. It was a response to the devastating fire in the nearby squatter areas in 1953. The government's decision to construct this public housing marked a significant shift in the housing policy from informal settlements to planned public housing. This transition played a key role in improving living conditions for many residents.

Exploring the preserved rooms and exhibits gave the students a glimpse into the living conditions and challenges faced by the early low-income residents. The visit also instilled in the students a sense of appreciation for the efforts taken to preserve heritage and foster community engagement.
